University of Colorado Urogynecology supports the community through speaking engagements, public discussions, sponsored events and charities. The goal of CU Urogynecology physicians and staff is to raise awareness about pelvic floor disorders through education, as well as support the medical and patient community as a whole.

Upcoming and ongoing events:

Group Preoperative Conferences

University of Colorado Urogynecology now offers group preoperative conferences on the first and third Fridays of every month from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

During group pre-op conferences, physicians will provide information on topics related to urogynecology and surgery, including prolapse and incontinence, surgery options, as well as risks and benefits of surgery. Nurses and staff will also give instructions on post-operative care and lead a short tour of the surgery area.

After your surgery has been scheduled with your physician, our scheduling staff will let you know which group pre-op conference to attend. Patients are encouraged to bring significant others, family members or friends who may be helping them through the surgery and recovery process to their group pre-op conference.

Individuals who are not currently patients of CU Urogynecology and are interested in learning more about women’s pelvic health may also attend the pre-op conference lectures. If you or someone you know may want to attend, please contact us. Cost is free for all attendees.

After the conference, there will also be time for patients to meet one-on-one with staff to finish paperwork, ask questions or complete bloodwork.

Let’s Talk: Conversations About Women’s Health

Join us for a discussion about pivotal life transitions, presented by the Center for Women’s Health Research. Dr. Marsha K. Guess’s talk, WOMENopause: The Art of Graceful Aging, will review the signs and symptoms of menopause and discuss evidence-based treatments for women as they transition to their next phase of aging. By dispelling myths and misconceptions about the inevitable, Dr. Guess will aim to employ women with the tools and knowledge needed to journey into this stage with dignity, balance and elegance.

Top researcher presents on female pelvic floor health and childbirth

Join us for the 6th Annual William B. Goddard lecture with Dr. Victoria L. Handa of John Hopkins Bayview Medical Center on Wednesday April 17th at 7:30 a.m. in the Krugman Conference Hall on the Anschutz Medical Campus. Dr. Handa will review recent research findings concerning the effect childbirth can have on the health of the pelvic floor. This event is open to the public and a breakfast reception will follow.

The relationship between pelvic floor disorders and pelvic pain in girls

Dr. Marsha K. Guess leads a workshop at the North American Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Gynecology annual conference, entitled: “Water Over the Bridge: The Complex Relationship Between Urinary and Defecatory Disorders and Pelvic Pain in Adolescent Girls.” The workshop reviews best practices for evaluating and treating adolescents with pelvic floor symptoms and reviews when a multidisciplinary approach may be necessary.

Primary care recommendations for pelvic floor disorders

Dr Marsha K. Guess acts as course director at the HRH Primary Care conference and reviews how to identify pelvic floor disorders in women and when to refer them to subspecialty care.

Dr. Guess presents at Vail OB-GYN conference

On February 18, 2018, Dr. Marsha K. Guess presented on diagnosing and treating hematuria (blood cells in urine) in women and adolescents.

Discussing pelvic floor conditions at the Colorado Academy of Physicians Assistants’ 2019 meeting

Dr. Marsha K. Guess attended the annual conference to present on management of urinary incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse in women, including how to identify these conditions and when to recommend surgical treatment.

Doctor team presents workshop at international conference

Drs. Marsha K. Guess, Kathleen Connell and Elisa Birnbaum from the University of Colorado presented a workshop titled, “Water Over the Bridge: The multidisciplinary approach to screening, evaluating, preventing and treating bowel and bladder dysfunction in adolescents and adults” at the 2018 International Urogynecological Association (IUGA) meeting in Austria. The IUGA annual meeting is attended by experts in the field of urogynecology who share the common goals of improving treatment and awareness of female pelvic floor conditions.

Women’s pelvic floor – the important PT component

Dr. Marsha K. Guess and Dr. Kathleen Connell, along with other expert panelists from the University, held a free case-based, interactive discussion of women’s pelvic floor disorders from a multidisciplinary perspective on April 26.

Urogynecology supports senior citizen community at the Castle Rock Craft Show Extraordinaire

Join Dr. Kathleen Connell, Dr. Marsha K. Guess and Cary Oaster from CU Urogynecology at the Castle Rock Craft Show Extraordinaire on November 4 from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This annual tradition brings together over 150 local vendors and gives back to local community organizations. Adult Health and Information Fair

This year CU Urogynecology will be one of the many adult health and resource providers attending the Adult Health and Information Fair at the Recreation Center in Eastridge in Highlands Ranch. Both  Dr. Kathleen Connell and Dr. Marsha K. Guess  from CU Urogynecology will be available to answer your questions about pelvic health & wellness from 9 a.m. to noon.  Please join us at this free event, which includes health screenings. Dr. Kathleen Connell speaks at Emory University 

On May 24, 2017, Dr. Kathleen Connell presented a lecture entitled, “Uterosacral ligament failure: Why we can’t help prolapsed uteri when they’ve fallen and can’t get up” to students and clinicians as part of Emory University’s Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology Grand Rounds.

Three physicians from the University of Colorado come together to discuss essential topics in women’s health

Take your health into your own hands by learning more about common conditions unique to women. Join CU urogynecologist Dr. Marsha K. Guess and Lone Tree Health Center physicians Dr. Regina Brown and Dr. Andrew Winkler for a free night of women’s health celebration and education – plus goody bags.

Each doctor is an expert in a specialized area of women’s health and will share wellness facts that every woman needs to know. Topics include breast cancer awareness, common pelvic health conditions and practices for revitalized skin.

The event will be held at the Denver South Marriott in Lone Tree, CO. Attendance is free, and all attendees will receive goody bags, refreshments (including appetizers and drinks) and skincare samples. We will also hold a raffle for prizes at the end of the night.

Minisymposium: Pelvic Organ Prolapse: Recent Insights and New Treatments

“Inflammaging and Pelvic Support: Is There a Fountain of Youth for the Pelvic Floor?”

Dr. Kathleen Connell will speak at the Society of Reproductive Investigation’s 62nd annual scientific meeting, March 25-28, in San Francisco. Dr. Connell is lead researcher for the study “Inflammaging of Uterosacral Ligaments: A Novel Estrogen Modulated Mechanism of Pelvic Organ Prolapse.”

Bladder Health Week: November 17, 6:00 p.m.

The University of Colorado Urogynecology doctors will be giving a talk called “Break Free From PFDs” during Bladder Health Week at the Denver Marriott Tech Center on November 17 at 6:00 p.m.

Bladder Health Week is a national health advocacy week encouraging individuals to talk to their friends, loved ones and health care professionals about bladder health.

Annual Scientific Meeting for the Society of Gynecologist Investigation

Transforming Women’s Health via Translational Investigation: A Global Perspective

Dr. Kathleen Connell was accepted for an oral presentation at the 2014 Society for Reproductive Investigation’s 61st annual scientific meeting on March 27th, 2014 in Florence, Italy.

The abstract, “HOXA11 – a homeobox gene – regulates expression of oxytocin receptor in uterosacral ligaments” looks at the cellular events that control the maintenance of the smooth muscle cells, which affect the tone of the uterosacral ligaments.
