Female pelvic medicine and reconstructive surgery encompasses a number of areas related to female pelvic health. As part of the University of Colorado Hospital, UC Urogynecology doctors focus on advancing the field of urogynecology through conducting research, practicing evidence-based medicine, and using only the most up-to-date and rigorously tested techniques.
Actively participating in research helps our practice stay at the forefront of female pelvic medicine, reconstructive surgery, and obstetrics and gynecology.

Research by Kathleen Connell, MD
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Connell directs the Urogynecology basic science laboratory at the University of Colorado School of Medicine on the Anschutz medical campus. In this capacity, she is responsible for organizing and leading the section’s translational research activities.
In her research, Dr. Connell seeks to understand the cellular changes that take place in the pelvic tissues that lead to pelvic floor disorders seen in her patients.
During her years as a junior faculty member at Yale, she was a scholar in the National Institute for Child Health and Human Development Women’s Reproductive Health Research Career Development Program. Her seminal work identified a developmental gene that directs turnover of the connective tissue in pelvic ligaments and found that it is also deficient in women with pelvic organ prolapse.
Dr. Connell is the current Chair for the Basic Science Interest Group for the American Urogynecologic Society and works to advance the science in her field. She’s board certified in Obstetrics & Gynecology and was one of the first doctors in Colorado to become board certified in Urogynecology. She presents her research at national and international meetings, has several publications in basic science and medical journals, including an invited review in the New England Journal of Medicine.
